C-反应蛋白由五个24KDa原聚体(含206个氨基酸)以非共价连结成为五元体环形结构。C-反应蛋白会结合在死亡细胞或微生物外膜上的磷酸胆碱(phosphocholine),以激活补体系统。当体内有急性炎症、细菌感染、组织的损伤时,C-反应蛋白在数小时内出现,而疾病治愈后又很快就消失。C-反应蛋白并不仅限于单一疾病的诊断。它的临床价值主要在于组织损伤的筛检和监测,应用在判断病人是否发炎以及诊断发炎性疾病复发的可能性,藉以评估抗炎药物治疗的成效。由于具有很好的稳定性及精确性,可以是炎症和组织损伤的非特异性标志物。另外C-反应蛋白可用来协助类风湿性关节炎的诊断。
